Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to hold accountable those behind the recent arson attacks that have ravaged local government council secretariats across the state, this was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Nelson Chukwudi. Speaking on Tuesday during the swearing-in of four new commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Fubara warned that his administration would not tolerate political thuggery and lawlessness.
With tensions high following the destruction of secretariats in Ikwerre, Emohua, and Eleme LGAs, the governor assured the public that a full investigation, in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force and the Directorate of State Services (DSS), is underway to unmask the culprits.
"We will not fold our hands and watch sponsored political thugs run berserk. Those responsible will be brought to book and made to account for their atrocities," Fubara declared, in a stern message to those behind the violence.
The governor had previously warned of potential unrest during the swearing-in of newly elected local government chairmen on October 6, 2024, after receiving intelligence reports of planned disruptions. Despite these warnings, chaos ensued, with political thugs reportedly torching government buildings.
"I knew they were unhappy and would go the extra mile to create disaffection. But let me be clear—this will not go unpunished," Fubara said, expressing his frustration over the reckless actions of the thugs.
While addressing the state’s volatile political climate, Fubara urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory violence.
"I appreciate your patience. If we meet them force-for-force, we will be the losers. Let’s stay peaceful and wise. We are carrying a basket of precious eggs in our hands, and we must be careful," he advised, calling for restraint in the face of provocation.
Fubara also took the opportunity to swear in four new commissioners to the state executive council, namely: Hon. Israel Lebura Ngbuelu, PhD; Hon. Evans Bapakaye Bipi; Barrister Otamiri John Ngubo; and Hon. Barrister Benibo Anabraba. He urged the new appointees to be dedicated and diligent, warning them against resignation in the face of political pressure.
The governor further emphasized the urgent need to tackle oil theft, warning that the country’s dwindling oil revenue poses a serious threat to Nigeria's economy. "If we don’t curb oil theft and pipeline vandalization, there won’t be funds to address critical issues. We need every hand on deck to increase production and boost our revenue," Fubara stressed.
As political tension continues to simmer in Rivers State, Fubara’s administration is poised to take decisive action. The governor announced plans to showcase the achievements of his government by the end of October 2024, despite the distractions caused by political drama.
Fubara assured Rivers people that his administration would continue to prioritize their interests and thanked them for their unwavering support before, during, and after the elections.
